How to Use This 3D Printing Blog Before Sending an RFQ

This page is not meant to make every buyer an additive manufacturing engineer. It is here to help you send better information, ask sharper questions and avoid the small mistakes that slow down a real quote review. A file that looks clean on screen can still have thin walls, reversed faces, unsupported edges, missing threads or a finish requirement that changes the process route.

File review

Prepare CAD, STL, STEP or photos before quote review

Start with scale, units, wall thickness, hole size, assembly clearance and target quantity. If the part is visual, send reference photos and finish notes. The STL file preparation guide is still useful even when the final quote needs STEP files or drawings.

Process choice

Compare SLA, MJF, SLS, SLM, FDM, BJ and WJP

Each process has a practical place. SLA is good for smooth appearance samples. MJF and SLS are better for many nylon functional parts. Metal printing makes sense only when the use case justifies cost and post-processing. Read the MJF guide or the metal printing comparison before choosing only by price.

Material and finish

Look past the material name and check surface requirements

Material names do not tell the whole story. PA12, resin, ABS-like plastics, TPU and stainless steel behave differently after sanding, dyeing, painting, tapping, coating or machining. For nylon projects, the PA12 material guide is a good starting point.

Plan prototypes, packaging and small-batch OEM production together

A prototype quote is not always the same as a production quote. Batch quantity, finishing consistency, packing method, inspection needs and export timing all matter.
